AAR Mini-Polls: Which Should We Do Next?

1-1911-drawing-by-charles-dana-gibson-everettAAR reader response to the re-opening of the Mini-polls was robust and we are thrilled with the updated Western/Frontier romances.  With renewed spirits we turned our attention to the rest of the Mini-polls (see all the results here under “Top Ten Polls”).  We quickly realized that we would like your input as to which lists you would like to see updated next. To be honest, it’s been many years since these lists were started and some are definitely outdated, like the list from 2006 for the Top 10 E-books. And some of the lists seem to be in need of splitting (such as Paranormal and Time Travel Romances).

Following are all of the current mini-polls that need to be updated:

  • Contemporary Romance (does not include Romantic Suspense)
  • British European Historicals
  • Eurasian/Pan-Pacific Historicals
  • Romantic Suspense
  • Chick Lit
  • Short Stories
  • Anthologies
  • Inspirational Romance
  • Funny Authors
  • Funny Titles
  • SF/Fantasy and Futuristic Romance
  • Paranormal and Time Travel Romance
  • Pets You Wish Were Yours
  • Holiday Reads
  • Two-Hanky Reads
  • Mainstream Sexy Romance
  • Erotic Romance
  • Heroes
  • Heroines
  • Couples
  • Comfort Reads

We would like you to list up to ten of the current Mini-polls that you would like to see updated first, in numbered order of your preference, in the comments section below.  We’ll use the suggestions, in your priority order, as our guide in updating these polls. We’re going to tally all of your comments, so don’t hesitate to list a poll that someone else has mentioned. The more people who list one of the polls as a favorite, the sooner we’ll update that list.

And finally, we would like to know if there are any new Mini-poll categories you would like to see created in the future.

Thanks! We look forward to reading your thoughts about the Mini-polls.

I’m assuming that “”Funny Titles”” means a book that is funny, not a title that is funny. Right?

:) Yes, “”Funny Titles”” refers to your favorite funny books. “”Funny Authors”” refers to your go-to authors who write funny romances.

I thought Funny Titles meant the actual titles were funny! Oops.

I like the idea of Best Authors (consistent A-book authors; auto-buy authors). A great way to assist your romance readers.

Thx for asking for our input. AAR continues to excel!

I see in the Special Listings page that you’re opening other lists and creating a new one (Green romance). What is that?

I like that idea about an ‘auto-buy authors’ mini-poll. We all have a couple of them, I think.

I also think the mini-polls either needs a poll for favorite series and/or for books in a series to be treated as one entry for the titles on some of these polls.

I like the idea of favorite series but wonder if it shouldn’t be broken up by genre? Or are you just thinking of series that include the same hero and/or heroine?

Both actually. It would be a huge plus for the hero, heroine, and couples mini-polls.

But also for SF/Fantasy it would great if we could list Psy/Changeling series rather than individual book titles as an example since the mini-polls have a limited number of entries. I’m not sure there enough titles for every genre to have both a Favorite Contemporary Romance and Favorite Contemporary Romance Series. Plus that seems like much more work for you.

Yes, I was specifically thinking of SF/Fantasy and Paranormal in terms of the series.

How would you define (or describe) the “”romance classics”” mini-poll?”” I have my own ideas but would love to get more feedback on it.

Well I think there are two ways to think about it, either classics of the modern romance genre, books that defined or changed the genre whether you like them or not, from early examples like E.M. Hull’s The Sheikh to Woodwiss et al or even more recently Balogh or Quinn.

The one I’d be more interested in would be more literary classics, say pre 1950s, that would appeal to the modern romance reader: P&P, Jane Eyre etc are obvious but maybe some books that don’t have a HEA or have a broader canvas than the love story: E.M. Forster, Shane, Dumas etc. Although I admit I’d like to know in advance whether they have a HEA or not.

Not sure what the difference is between “”funny authors”” and “”funny titles,”” unless it’s a recognition that some funny titles are written by authors not normally considered funny.

4. Chick lit
5. Mainstream sexy romance

I’d also like to suggest a list for the American historical or Americana that is not limited to just frontier or westerns. I’d also be interested in a mini-poll of all-time romance classic greats.
