A Tale of Two Species
There’s been a lot going on in my life right now. Flying across a gazillion time zones, starting a new school year, picking up new classes (music teacher doing social studies? Perfect!), moving house, blah blah blah. Upheavals galore, and normally I’d really just take it all in stride. But one thing has been driving me up the wall – actually, thousands and thousands of things. That’s right, folks: My new house is infested with fleas.
I’ve heard all the explanations: House being shut up for six weeks, previous owners having pets and equestrians, not being cleaned before I moved in, etc. It’s all true, but it doesn’t actually change the fact that I’ve had to bug bomb my house twice in the past two weeks (to get both flea cycles, doncha know), and clean it from top to bottom, and wash a lot of dishes, and do lots of laundry. And that I’ve been bitten to kingdom come (not that you needed to know that). It’s tiring, it’s tiresome, and most of all I really wish I’d known it was infested before I moved in.
I can’t blame anyone, really. Not even the fleas, who are just doing what comes natural to them. But the next time I move house, I know checking for infestations will be at the top of my list.
For those who move frequently: What do you always check for?

Wonderful write-up here. I’ve learnt some thing new from your post, every day is a school day.
You don’t need to convince me personally with strong phrases and deep thoughts, I can go through your words and what you want to achieve within your writings. I do not have to agree all the time, but all I can say is, this is just a great piece.
There are many medications used to avoid the infection of fleas on dogs, some of these are: sprays, powders and collar. It is better to go for a serious treatment if the fles has already infested the dog – this is the best way out, since the infection is already established and will require treatment to remove it completely. Preventive measures are only taken to stop or prevent the infection of the dog.
My sympathies! We got two kittens before the holidays from a cat rescue group who “rescued” them from a feral mother barn cat. When one of them got sick and had to go to the vet (they’d been taken to the vet for initial checkups by the foster family), the vet found flea dirt on her. I rushed home to check the other kitten, and sure enough he had visible fleas. I panicked. We have a dog, and the idea of our house becoming infested with fleas absolutely freaked me out. The kittens were too small to be treated with flea medications, so I bathed them in Dawn dishwashing liquid and managed to flea-comb off at least a couple dozen off each kitten. I washed all of the linens, and we vacuumed like crazy. In fact, we broke down and finally bought the new Dyson vacuum we’d been wanting for several years. We managed to catch the problem before it became an infestation, but it’s something I wouldn’t wish on my very worst enemy!
Good luck.
Thanks for the sympathy guys. I THINK (cross, cross fingers) it’s sorted. I performed at a concert recently with someone else, and my boss said we should call ourselves Itchy and Scratchy. Ha. Ha. Ha. It’s okay, as long as the fleas die.
I LOVED the “doncha know”
Really sorry to hear this, it’s gotta be awful! I was watching this show on discovery, this woman was getting bitten every night but they couldn’t find the bed bugs in her bed or any furniture near her bed. So she kept looking for belongings around the house and she found out that all the bed bugs were actually hiding in a big suit case which was in her room. They would come out at night, bite the poor girl and then go back to their hiding place in the suit case. I’m not sure if this is true for you. I’m sure you’ve turned your house upside down trying to get rid of them. But if, God forbid, it didn’t work this time either, then see if they’re hiding some place else. Of course, those were bed bugs these are fleas so it’s not the same thing but no harm in checking. I hope you are flea free now!
I cannot even imagine. Good luck to you, Jean.
