On the Brink of Passion

TEST

In the final book of Tamsen Parker’s series set in the fictional Olympics she calls The Snow and Ice Games, we spend some pages with one of America’s figure skating pairs teams. Jubilee and Beckett could not be more different, and you know what they say about opposites attracting…

Jubilee was once on the top of the skating world. She and her then-husband Stephen won gold in the pairs at the last SIGs and they were poised for more glory. Then, Jubilee’s dreams crashed when Stephen died and she was left floundering. Fortunately for her, Beckett was newly partner-less and they teamed up for this year’s games. She’s not really fun to work with, but Beckett is okay with that since ‘fun’ doesn’t win gold medals. As I was reading about Jubilee, I wondered if Ms. Parker wanted to see if she could form an entire book around the stereotype of the ice princess, because that’s exactly what she is.

By the way, If you’ve ever seen the nineties movie Cutting Edge with Moira Kelly and DB Sweeney, you’ll have a good vibe of the dynamic between the two. The exception being that Beckett is serious about his skating and is as dedicated to greatness as Jubilee is – despite his outward attitude.

The plot kicks into gear when they arrive at the games to find out that the separate rooms they had been promised never materialized and Jubilee and Beckett are forced to room together. Bickering leads to other things and before we all know it, our sparring partners are hurtling towards their own happily ever after.

Of the SIG books, this was my least favorite because of some machinations by some other characters, but I still adored Beckett and was really happy with Jubilee’s arc. Overall this is a fun, satisfying read that is perfect for opposites attract trope junkies.

  1. excellent book: interesting, funny dialogs, deep understanding of each character, interesting secondary characters, and also sexy.

Voracious reader, with a preference for sassy romances and happily ever afters. In a relationship with coffee, seeing whiskey on the side.
