If you are looking for an unconventional heroine and setting, then look no further then Lucky O’Toole and Sin City. Lucky is the chief problem solver for Babylon, one of the new mega casino/resorts in Las Vegas. It is her job to make sure what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.
Lucky, raised in a whorehouse by her madam mother, ran away to Las Vegas at the tender age of 15. Using all the moxie she had, she convinced Albert Rothstein, “The Big Boss” to hire her. Since then she has worked her way up the ladder, and now is the go-to person for problems big and small. In just the first chapter, Lucky is dealing with large naked guy found unconscious, under a stairwell, finessing payment for a wrecked Ferrari, figuring out if a jackpot winner has won three hundred sixty five thousand dollars, or eighty five million, and putting the lid on the filmed accident that just might be murder of Lyda Sue, a casino employee taking a swan dive out of the company’s helicopter to her death. And that is just one day’s worth of problems. In the coming week Babylon will host: the award ceremony for the porn industry, a trade show of sexual toys, both of which shock and tantalize the geeks from ElectroniCon, the high tech industry gathering, and then there’s the spouse swapping organization’s arriving for their annual meeting.
With so many items to juggle, it no wonder that Lucky has little time for relationships but things are changing on that front. Her best friend Teddie, known as Great Teddie Devine, the premier female impersonator in Los Vegas wants to modify their relationship from friendship to something more and Paxton Dane, the perfect advertisement of testosterone male beauty, the new hire in security, is not shy about showing his interest in Lucky as well. Finally, Lucky has a chance to end her long dry spell if she willing to take the risk.
While many things in the book are entertaining, so many outrageous things happen one after another that I did reach a saturation point, resulting in me putting the book down for a while. Some of the scenarios are hilarious, causing me chuckle out loud, but others missed their mark. My favorite parts are the touching relationship building scenes, rather then the risque, glitzy, flamboyant situations. But then again, I have always enjoyed the emotional connection in books most of all.
The book is more chick lit then romance with its emphasis on the heroine’s ability to manage all the unprecenteded problems that come her way with humor, sarcasm and wit while wearing Jimmy Choos and carrying a Birkin purse. But don’t get the wrong idea as Wanna Get Lucky? is not all about the right clothes. There is a mystery to solve and Lucky knows how to handle the press and the police plus investigate on her own.
This is the start of a brand new series, featuring an unshockable heroine with an heart of gold and a thirst for revenge and despite its flaws, I suspect many will find it likable.
