Seducing Alicia

TEST

Dr. Alicia Underwood is a top radiation expert working for a company called Envirotech in Seattle. The “Wipe Clean Project” is hers alone, and will, if this groundbreaking research is proven effective, create a bacteria that will ultimately “eat” radioactive waste at the earth surface, keeping it away from humans.

Jason Kirkland is the new janitor at Envirotech, and the ladies in the office are swooning. He’s one hunk of a man (remember Lucky, the Diet Coke guy?), but underneath it all he’s also an industrial spy. He’s been sent to steal the bacteria by a rival, and financially strained, company, Bio-Intera.

Soon Alicia begins to notice that Jason is cleaning her office a little too meticulously each day, and that he also appears to have intentions toward her, which is something she can’t understand. She’s always been a brainy kind of a girl, a workaholic, divorced from a husband who thought she was lousy in bed. But she can’t seem to stop thinking about Jason, a mere janitor.

Jason, for his part, is not what he appears, and has his share of emotional scars. As he gets closer to Alicia, and her brilliant research, he begins to doubt his mission, and his ability to keep things between them casual.

Simply put, this book is engrossing, charming, and clever. I’ve never read a Zebra Bouquet, nor a novel by Tracy Cozzens, but I was pleasantly surprised at both the quality of the book, and the author’s talent. This is no standard series romance, either. The setting is different, the characters surprisingly unique and textured, and the story unusual and intriguing. I have no idea whether the radiation aspects of the story are factual, just a product of the author’s imagination, or somewhere in between, but it really doesn’t matter. The romance is believable, and Jason and Alicia are defined with more depth than is typically seen in a book of this length.

The only thing that keeps Seducing Alicia from my keeper shelf is the quickness of the spoken “I love you,” secondary characters who come thisclose to stereotypes, and the complete lack of regard for birth control. But don’t let these trivialities stop you from enjoying an excellent book. Do yourself a favor and get this one. It’s a delight from start to finish.
