2012 Reading Year So Far: Debut Romance Authors

poll It seems hard to believe, but with the start of July we are now at the halfway point in the 2012 reading year. Many of us made resolutions back in early January about the reading we were going to do this coming year. Well, in the midst of polling for the best of 2011 romances here in AAR’s Annual Reader Poll, we pollsters made a resolution to do some sneak peeks for some categories that will appear in the next Annual Reader Poll. We decided we would focus on a few of the more problematic categories in the 2011 poll.

Every January AAR polls readers for their favorite romance titles and characters. We also poll for the Best Debut Author. Some of you may recall that the notion of a debut author is getting trickier with each passing year. Many authors change publishers or genres, and when they do so, they often write under a new name. That is why Thea Harrison (aka Amanda Carpenter, author of 16 books) was ineligible for the award in the 2011 poll.

Other times, books released late in December are actually January releases. A perfect example of this occurred when many readers voted for Cecilia Grant as their favorite 2011 debut author for A Lady Awakened. Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble show the publication date for her book as December 27, 2011, but the book’s actual copyright page shows January 2012. This means Cecilia Grant wasn’t eligible in the 2011 poll as a debut author, but she will be in the 2012 poll when voting begins in January of 2013.

What’s a voter to do? We thought it might be fun to start a discussion now of some of your favorite romance authors who have made their debut in the first six months of 2012. We realize that many wonderful authors may make a debut over the next six months, but this will get the discussion started, and get us all looking out for outstanding debut authors. And if you haven’t read one of the authors who have debuted already, and think their book might be interesting, it will give you six full months to read the book before polling starts in January of 2013. To get things started, we’ve prepared a preliminary list of authors who have made their romance debut so far in 2012. We’re not saying anything about the quality of the books written by these authors — that’s up to you decide.

Right now, the authors we have found with 2012 debuts are:

Kristin Callihan – Firelight
Manda Collins – How to Dance with a Duke
Tracey Devlyn – A Lady’s Revenge
Julianne Donaldson – Edenbrooke
Alyssa Everett – Ruined by Rumor
Cecilia Grant – A Lady Awakened
Erin Knightley – More Than a Stranger
Ruthie Knox – Ride With Me and About Last Night
Roni Loren – Crash Into You
Sara Luck – Susanna’s Choice
Cathryn Parry – Something to Prove
Anna Randol – A Secret in Her Kiss
Jordan Rose – Perpetual Light
Heather Snow – Sweet Enemy
Simone St. James – The Haunting of Maddy Clare
Jillian Stone – An Affair With Mr. Kennedy
Joan Swan – Fever
Beatriz Williams – Overseas

We initially thought the following authors made their debut in 2012, but have discovered they were actually published previously:

Emma Cane (also writes as Gayle Callen)

Amanda DeWees (published in 1990)

Samantha Grace (published a short story in 2011)

Have you read any of these 2012 debut authors? If not, do you plan to? Are there other authors who have made a debut in 2012 that we’ve missed?

I’ve read two of Cecilia Grant’s books and Ruined by Rumor by Alyssa Everett. Grant’s had more emotional depth but I really enjoyed Ruined by Rumor too. I didn’t get angsty while reading it. I picked up Sweet Enemy because of the good reviews but didn’t get pass the first chapter. I should really give it a go again but with all the other books in my pile and now this list which I have to explore. I just don’t know.

I have Cecila Grant’s books on my TBR pile. The comparisons to Judith Ivory I’ve heard are what have me truly excited.

Best debut author (and best novel) I’ve read this year is G.N. Chevalier’s Bonds of Earth. An m/m novel that takes place post WWI between two veterans.

I liked Jessica Scott’s Because of You this last year. I can’t remember when I read it though. May have been last fall which makes it ineligible. I’m a teacher and I think of years as Aug to Aug. :)

I have Cecilia Grant’s A Lady Awakened, haven’t read it yet. Read Ruthie Knox’s About Last Night. I was pleased with it. I’m having such a difficult time finding contemporaries I like. I liked it enough to order Ride With Me, which I haven’t read yet. I’ll be looking into others on the list.

The first name that popped into my head was Cecilia Grant. Fantastic first book. I have the 2nd on hold at the library and am hoping to read it this weekend.

I also read Ruined by Rumor by Alyssa Everett and really liked it. It reminded me of a traditional regency.

I have Ruthie Knox’s About that Night on my Nook waiting to be read soon.

The Heather Snow, Erin Knightley, & Jillian Stone books have all caught my eye and are on my TBR pile.

This is probably the first time in a while that I’ve read or plan to read a lot of deubt authors.

A high five for this blog post. You are definitely correct on the tricky nature of ferreting out a true debut author.

I’ve only read two of the author’s mentioned – Cecilia Grant and Heather Snow. I enjoyed reading both of these authors, but I’m glad to get a heads up on the other debut authors on this list. Great idea!

Thanks, Dabney and Jane! Two more to add to the list.

Jane, if the Elisabeth Barrett is reminiscent of Nora Roberts’ Chesapeake Bay or Three Sisters series, it’s definitely one I need to read.

I just read and reviewed a debut by Elisabeth Barrett called DEEP AUTUMN HEAT – July 2012.

It’s pretty solid, with maybe a few too many plot threads. The author mentions Nora Roberts as an inspiration and this one kind of reminded me of her Chesapeake Bay or Three Sisters series. Not a knock-your-socks off debut, but very good and worth looking for if you enjoy contemporaries.

Maggie and LeeB, you’ve read a lot more debut authors than I have. I’ve been considering the Beatriz Williams book.

TrishJ, when I was preparing the links for this the Ruthie Knox books caught my eye. I’m going to have to give one of them a try.

I;ve read three from the list and have a fourth on my TBR. I read Beatriz Williams – Overseas and Joan Swan Fever. The best of the lot listed was easily Simone St. James’ The Haunting of Maddy Clare. Can not wait for her next book! The book on my TBR is Seducing Mr. Kenedy I also read Regina Jennings Sixty Acres and a Bride, which is an Inspirational debut. Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi is a YA debut as is Everneath by Brodi Ashton. I am fairly certain Olivia Newport who wrote The Pursuit of Lucy Banning is a debut author. So far it looks like I’ve done six.
