Ah, spring. It’s been late coming to Toronto, but we’ve had some indisputably springy days in T-Dot. And when the sun’s shining bright and birds are chirping, the first song that comes to mind is this song by Tom Lehrer.

Don’t know what that says about my advocacy on behalf of pigeons, but I can’t help it. The song always puts me in a good mood.

Here’s a video of Mr. Lehrer performing the song live in 1998, almost forty years after he wrote it. Enjoy!

That’s a good one Sandy. The Beatles really have a knack for nailing it; my second favourite tired song is, of course, “I’m So Tired”. (Absolute favourite tired song is “I Feel Like I’m Not Out of Bed Yet”, from “On the Town”.)

Wikipedia says that Tom Lehrer is a maths professor, and he sometimes made up songs to go along with his lessons. Lucky students.

The song that epitomizes spring for me is Here Comes the Sun. It perfectly captures the euphoria you feel on that first warm day when the sun is shining and you’re enjoying the outdoors after a long, cold, lonely winter.

I know that Tom Lehrer song. Few people today know about him and that’s too bad.
