Some People Want to Fill the World with Creepy Love Songs

brokenheart

I love love songs. From medieval ballads like Greensleeves to power ballads like Sweet Child of Mine there is nothing more romantic than a truly heartfelt musical tribute. The lyrics to these tunes are often descriptions of what we want our own affairs of the heart to resemble. Can’t Smile Without You lets my lover know they are the reason for the goofy grin on my face. I Just Called To Say I Love You brings to mind the wonder that love can bring to the everyday in simple ways. I’ll Be There For You reminds us that love means not having to carry every burden yourself. Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mann captures how we see our beloved.

But there is a downside to the love song and that is those songs whose lyrics just plain creep me out. Stalker songs have been with us almost from the beginning such as I Will Follow Him by Peggy March. “I love him, I love him, I love him and where he goes I’ll follow” sounds like devotion. Then you realize she decided to start following him around after he just touched her hand and you wonder if the checkout boy at the grocery store might have gotten the wrong idea when you fumbled the change and maintained hand contact for a full ten seconds or so. Carly Simon’s You Belong To Me reminds us just how hard (and dangerous) breaking up can be when the other person refuses to let go. James Blunts You’re Beautiful reminds us that we aren’t safe even in a crowded place. Lionel Richie’s Hello lets us know that our neighbors can hear us when we walk by. One Way or Another by Blondie lets us know that some people just won’t take no for an answer.

None of these songs get my vote for creepiest though. That honor goes to Michael Buble’s Save the Last Dance For Me. In this little ditty a man describes a woman having a wonderful time at a party. She is dancing with the guy who “gave her the eye” and smiling every smile “for the man who held your hand neath the pale moon light”. Then she is told:

But don’t forget who’s takin’ you home
And in whose arms you’re gonna be
So darlin’ save the last dance for me

Baby don’t you know I love you so
Can’t you feel it when we touch
I will never, never let you go
I love you oh so much

This is either one incredibly troubled relationship, in which the woman is clearly very interested in other men or this guy is planning to nab some unsuspecting woman at the end of this dance. Either way, there is a clear threat implied in the lyrics above. Whatever this girl does, she’s not leaving that dance with anybody else. While I like the music to this number, the words always have me switching stations. I’m afraid for the woman it was written to. She could be lying in a shallow, unmarked grave as I type.

These love lyrics gone arwy have an upside. They supply us a good laugh via You Tube. Do you have any love songs that make you that tiny bit uncomfortable? Any lyrics that ever made you say – that doesn’t sound like love? Any that made you think “what the . . . “?

Howdy just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same outcome.

“We Are Young” by fun (from the Chevy commercial). It seemed like such a romantic, fun, awesome song… until I payed attention to the lyrics at the beginning of the song:

My lover she’s waiting for me
Just across the bar
My seats been taken by some sunglasses
Asking ’bout a scar
And I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you’re trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies
You know I’m trying hard to take it back

What?! I don’t care now that the rest of the song is awesome…that line about the scar and apologies…all I can picture now is some guy abusing his girlfriend!

Kathy,

I’ve always been a little creeped out by that song too. Girls married younger back then but still, it feels a bit on the pedophile side of things.

I love the song Marry Me by Bruno Mars. So sweet! But you are right, that line in the Train version is a bit off.

I love the music and the delivery of “Marry Me” by Train, but near the end of the song the lyric is “If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe” and you realize he’s been fantasizing about marrying someone he’s never even talked to, which is a little creepy to me. Still like the song but try to ignore that one line.

ok this goes back aways but
“You’re 16, you’re beautiful, and you’re mine!”
Some of the songs from the 60’s and 70’s are
REALLY creepy.

Sting and Clay Aiken are high on my creep meter, too, but the one that really gets me is “Love You More” by Sunscream. IAccompanied by bouncy music the lyrics start out like this

You can make the sun turn purple
You can make the sea turn turtle
But you know you can never make me love you more
You can turn wine into water
And sadness into laughter
But you know you can never make me love you more

The female singer has this breathless, slightly husky voice and I always thought the song was just beautiful. One day my daughter was in the car listening to it with me and she said “how can you stand this garbage?”
I was like “What?!” And she was like “listen to the words!”

Sure enough, the last chorus says

You can make the sun turn purple
You can make the sea turn turtle
But you know you can never make me love you more
You can turn wine into water
As fathers rape their daughters
But you know you can never make me love you more

Eeeew!

I didn’t grow up listening to the Christmas Song ‘Baby, Don’t Go’ so image my surprise when I wanted to learn the lyrics to sing along and got the ‘uh, this is totally a date-rape song’ vibe. For someone to ask what’s in their drink and she says openly the ‘answer is no’. So yeah, that song makes me squirm a bit now.

And this summer there was a song called In My Head (I had to look it up) by Jason Derulo that had a great beat until I started finishing his thoughts in my own head. To me it sounded like he was saying ‘You’ll be screaming noooo (but when I read the lyrics its says ohhh) and I started to wonder why she would be screaming no. He’s going to show her the ropes (which in my head he’s going to tie her up with), show her a side of love she’s never seen (so yeah my thoughts go to a dark place) In my head, I see you all over me (and in my head I’m thinking, you mean you see her blood all over you). I get all this from the opening lines also about how it’s all just a game – but I could be reading wayyyy to much into it ;)

Love this blog. There’s so many bad love songs. How about the Stones’ “Some Girls” and “Under my Thumb.” Or Lil’ Jon’s offensive “Get Low.” I think “Possession” by Sarah McLachlan is icky. And–I have to say I love this song–it’s pretty tough to beat “LA County” by Lyle Lovett. “Alison” by Elvis Costello is deady. But the song that no one ever seems to realize is a scary stalker song is “The One I Love” by R.E.M. I’ve actually heard it at weddings and wondered if the couple actually read the lyrics.

LOL on the Creepy Love video. The lyrics to Don’t You Want Me by Human League has always bothered me

You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
When I met you I picked you out, I shook you up, and turned you around
Turned you into someone new Now five years later on you’ve got the world at your feet
Success has been so easy for you
But don’t forget it’s me who put you where you are now
And I can put you back down too
Chorus :Don’t, don’t you want me?You know I can’t believe it when I hear that you won’t see me
Don’t, don’t you want me?You know I don’t believe you when you say that you don’t need me
It’s much too late to find You think you’ve changed your mind
You’d better change it back or we will both be sorry
Don’t you want me baby? Don’t you want me ohDon’t you want me baby? Don’t you want me

My vote goes to the creepiest of stalker songs : Every Breath You Take by The Police. Really, Sting, you’re hot and all (or used to be) but I need my privacy, dude.

How about Sting’s “Every Breath You Take.” Definitely a freaky stalker song:

Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I’ll be watching you

Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I’ll be watching you

Oh, cant you see
You belong to me
Now my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Since you’ve gone, I’ve been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around but it’s you I cant replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby please

Jean, I was about to post the EXACT SAME THING. “I could just watch you in your room”? Creepy. I guess it becomes slightly better if you think about it as a closeted gay man wishing he could be open about his feelings.

Maggie, I laughed at your analysis of “Save the Last Dance for Me”. So true! In Buble’s defence though, and to spread the blame around, it was originally a Drifters song.

Personally, I think Creepiest Love Song Ever goes to Clay Aiken’s “Invisible”:

If I was invisible
Then I could just watch you in your room
If I was invisible
I’d make you mine tonight

There’s more, but EW!
