But there is a downside to the love song and that is those songs whose lyrics just plain creep me out. Stalker songs have been with us almost from the beginning such as I Will Follow Him by Peggy March. “I love him, I love him, I love him and where he goes I’ll follow” sounds like devotion. Then you realize she decided to start following him around after he just touched her hand and you wonder if the checkout boy at the grocery store might have gotten the wrong idea when you fumbled the change and maintained hand contact for a full ten seconds or so. Carly Simon’s You Belong To Me reminds us just how hard (and dangerous) breaking up can be when the other person refuses to let go. James Blunts You’re Beautiful reminds us that we aren’t safe even in a crowded place. Lionel Richie’s Hello lets us know that our neighbors can hear us when we walk by. One Way or Another by Blondie lets us know that some people just won’t take no for an answer.
None of these songs get my vote for creepiest though. That honor goes to Michael Buble’s Save the Last Dance For Me. In this little ditty a man describes a woman having a wonderful time at a party. She is dancing with the guy who “gave her the eye” and smiling every smile “for the man who held your hand neath the pale moon light”. Then she is told:

So darlin’ save the last dance for me
Baby don’t you know I love you so

This is either one incredibly troubled relationship, in which the woman is clearly very interested in other men or this guy is planning to nab some unsuspecting woman at the end of this dance. Either way, there is a clear threat implied in the lyrics above. Whatever this girl does, she’s not leaving that dance with anybody else. While I like the music to this number, the words always have me switching stations. I’m afraid for the woman it was written to. She could be lying in a shallow, unmarked grave as I type.

I love the song Marry Me by Bruno Mars. So sweet! But you are right, that line in the Train version is a bit off.
I love the music and the delivery of “Marry Me” by Train, but near the end of the song the lyric is “If I ever get the nerve to say hello in this cafe” and you realize he’s been fantasizing about marrying someone he’s never even talked to, which is a little creepy to me. Still like the song but try to ignore that one line.

The female singer has this breathless, slightly husky voice and I always thought the song was just beautiful. One day my daughter was in the car listening to it with me and she said “how can you stand this garbage?”

I didn’t grow up listening to the Christmas Song ‘Baby, Don’t Go’ so image my surprise when I wanted to learn the lyrics to sing along and got the ‘uh, this is totally a date-rape song’ vibe. For someone to ask what’s in their drink and she says openly the ‘answer is no’. So yeah, that song makes me squirm a bit now.
And this summer there was a song called In My Head (I had to look it up) by Jason Derulo that had a great beat until I started finishing his thoughts in my own head. To me it sounded like he was saying ‘You’ll be screaming noooo (but when I read the lyrics its says ohhh) and I started to wonder why she would be screaming no. He’s going to show her the ropes (which in my head he’s going to tie her up with), show her a side of love she’s never seen (so yeah my thoughts go to a dark place) In my head, I see you all over me (and in my head I’m thinking, you mean you see her blood all over you). I get all this from the opening lines also about how it’s all just a game – but I could be reading wayyyy to much into it ;)

Love this blog. There’s so many bad love songs. How about the Stones’ “Some Girls” and “Under my Thumb.” Or Lil’ Jon’s offensive “Get Low.” I think “Possession” by Sarah McLachlan is icky. And–I have to say I love this song–it’s pretty tough to beat “LA County” by Lyle Lovett. “Alison” by Elvis Costello is deady. But the song that no one ever seems to realize is a scary stalker song is “The One I Love” by R.E.M. I’ve actually heard it at weddings and wondered if the couple actually read the lyrics.
