A New Toy

cameraIn the last couple of years, I’ve discovered several new gadgets that make life a little easier.  The first was my iPod.  I haven’t purchased an entire CD since and I’m okay with that.  The second was my Kindle.  What can I say?  I love it and it makes reading so convenient.  Plus, you don’t have to deal with some of those awful covers.  The third is my camera, which was the most necessary purchase of my three favorite toys.

Way back in 1996, I was given a Canon EOS Rebel X, which was my first real camera and it’s been everywhere I’ve been since then.  It’s been left in a hostel in Paris, forgotten in a ice cream parlor in Pisa, and dropped in the surf in Destin, but it always came back to me and worked beautifully – until two weeks ago.  It just stopped working and I was devastated.

Since I was planning an upcoming mini-getaway with my sister (and the fact that I have small children who think they desperately need their picture taken), I couldn’t wait around too long to purchase another camera. Because of all the years of wonderful pictures and good consumer ratings, I went back to Canon and purchased the EOS Rebel XSI.  Now I have to ask myself why I waited so long to go digital?  It makes picture taking so easy and the edit functions are awesome.  It now ranks in the top three gadgets I just can’t live without (not really, but you know what I mean).

What “toys” do you consider essential?

I don’t know why I didn’t buy a digital camera years ago. It’s so much easier. I love my laptop, but I think I could live without it.
I can live without my cell phone. It spends most its time either dead or misplaced and tends to cause arguments with my husband because of that. I do’t have TiVo, but I know that most who do, love it.

My cell phone is absolutely essential. On my wish list, but not essential, is a DVR. Loved it while I had it, but now I can’t justify the expense — especially since I don’t watch much TV. Oh, but the convenience!

Adding to LeeB’s comment. I so love being able to take digital photos. I’m a lousy photographer, so now can easily take two or more shots of everything I care about. I figure one will be okay. When I travel, I usually go through the photos in the evening and delete the ones that aren’t too good. But, I’ve still never run out of storage space.

Camera, netbook (for travel), cellphone for travel in Europe. I’m a Nikon fan myself. Switched to digital several years ago; it’s awesome to take as many photos you want and not worry about having to pay for the prints.
