Commencement
It’s that time of the year again, when high schools and universities all around the country begin pouring out young, hopeful graduates ready to take on the world or try their hand at college. Last night I donned my own gown and hood to participate in graduation ceremonies for the high school where I teach. As kids that I’ve spent the last four years with marched across the stage and received their diplomas to great fanfare, I realized I’d been remiss – I haven’t given my own graduation gifts as of yet.
I could go the easy route and give cash or gift cards, which is probably what they’d rather have anyway. Or, I could spend more time and thought and give a gift far more meaningful. Any suggestions or tried and true gift ideas out there?

I think I’ve decided to go with American Express gift cards – not cash, but yet it is.
My father used to say you can never go wrong with “Cash.” You know that they are going to use it, not return it or have the item sit in a drawer.
So that’s what I do — that way the student can buy what they want. I’m going to two graduation parties one today and one next week and both my neighbor’s daughter and nephew are getting “Cash.”
Oh, graduation gifts are always a tough one. I usually opt out for students I know and give gift cards to bookstores — somewhat academic, although there’s no guarantee they’ll actually buy books.
