Making Order out of Chaos…At Least Temporarily

messy-papersAlthough I’ve lived in my current place for less than a year, by the start of this winter, things were totally out of control. Thanks to a busy work schedule, and general exhaustion in the evenings, chaos had begun to rule. Where there once were neat empty counters and desktops, were now piles of disorganized papers, folders, and books (of course there would be books).

I would periodically try  to make things right, but these efforts were really just stop-gap measures, and never were very effective.
Finally, last month, things reached a tipping point. Partially spurred on by Jean’s post here about reorganizing, and completely fed up, I gave in and devoted a couple weekends to completely reorganizing my home. Of course this resulted in multiple trips to various stores to purchase a variety of organizers to help me out, numerous trips to the recycling bins and to various charity stores to donate clothes and books, but for the most part, it worked.

Unlike my previous, rather disorganized, efforts, this time before I did anything else, I walked from room to room in my home, with a notebook, and made notes about particularly problematic places. For example, the kitchen breakfast bar had become the place for me to dump unopened mail and assorted papers brought from my office when I’d first arrive home each night. My desk in my office become the second dumping place, should those assorted papers make it from the breakfast bar. And don’t get me started on the top of my dresser.

Armed with me list of problem areas, I sat down and brainstormed about potential ways that I could organize this stuff, and that wouldn’t require a lot of daily effort to maintain. Then, it was off for one of the first of many trips to Target, Ace Hardware, and other locations for the perfect organizers.

I’ve now lived with the results for a few weeks, and so far, things are working out quite well. There are still a couple problem areas that need a bit more work, but for the most part, the key problem areas are much better.

A relatively simple, and inexpensive purchase has solved the clutter on the breakfast bar. I went through the existing pile of papers, and sorted them into the major categories. I then purchased an inexpensive, but pretty file box and filled it with file folders labeled to match the problem categories. Every night, when I come home, I now sort quickly through my mail and papers, and put them in their appropriate file folder. It takes no more than a minute to do, no additional steps, and they’re put away.

One of my other successes was moving all of my spices and herbs from a cupboard a bit too high above my head, to a drawer where they are easy to see and sort through. Another success was the purchase of a couple cheap metal hanging baskets that I attached to the shelves in my laundry closet. I moved various bags and wraps from another drawer, and they’re now in the baskets — easy to see and non-cluttered.

Do you have any favorite organizing products or tips? I’d love to hear about them.

Linnie, first of all, where and when did you manage to snap a pic of my errant filing? ;-)

Secondly, congrats!

And thirdly, thanks for the added inspiration — but I still think I’ll put it off yet another day, as we’re having absolutely GORGEOUS weather here today.

Organizing can be a challenge — and I tend to be sentimental, and I DO take a look at things after I set them aside at first, so I can’t be quite as ruthless.

We live in an older (100+ year) home and so are quite space challenged. I love those shoe hanger bags that you can hang over the back of your closet door (the other day, on “Rachael Ray,” she did a little segment on organizing and pointed out that they can be used to organize more than just shoes!). Those movable hooks that you can hang over a door are handy, too — great way to add a hanging spot for your robe or spare towels in the bedroom or bathroom — or to make a spot for a coat or some such.

I also have some of those movable hooks in my kitchen — handy for hanging my dishtowels and potholders within each reach, and easy to move, remove, or hide them if I want.

And baskets. Decorative baskets are just a handy way to corral (and hide in plain sight!) cleaning supplies, remotes, magazines, electronic gadget chargers, etc.

For things such as cupboards and pantries, I’ve also found that having some of those wire stands can help increase shelf space and let you store two (or three!) rows of shorter items.

Good for you! I’m much better at being organized at work than I am at home. At work, I’ll gladly reorganize filing cabinets and purge catalogs, etc. At home, organization means things being in piles on the counter, floor, couch, bed, etc.

One thing that has worked well for me, though — on top of my dresser, i have a plastic basket for medicines, lotions, etc; an empty salsa jar for my make-up brushes and pencils; and a few decorative plates for earrings, hair elastics, bobby pins, etc. it still gets messy sometimes, but now it’s much easier to organize and find things when I get the chance.

LinnieGayl, congrats on tackling starting a monumental task. I am slightly anal when it comes to neat, so take this as a warning…..I am not a “keeper”. I throw away mercilessly! No “I’ll just put this over here until I look at it”. If you’ve thought that about an object, you most likely don’t need it. Only allow one place for overflow mail, don’t allow it to get too full, than RUTHLESSLY throw out !!! It’s hard at first, but I’ve been doing it so long now it’s second nature. Good luck and don’t be so hard on yourself. Remember, It’s your house, your stuff, and if it doesn’t bother you that’s OK too.

My favorite organizing method is PITCH IT, for which my wife tells me, with considerable regularity, that I have no sentiment. To which I just as invariably reply it has nothing to do with lack of sentiment…it’s survival.

No special hints right now, but to say congratulations, LinnieGayl. Now we don’t have to report you to Hoarders.com (just kidding). I can live with some clutter, but I need my kitchen and living room to be pretty neat. That way, I know the spaces I use the most are areas where I can go to in order to totally relax. I can’t do that in a messy room. So, cheers once again for you and I hope you’re able to keep moving in that direction.

My dad always had a saying when we got especially messy at home. It was: “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” Serves me well.
