Bad News for Chocoholics
New reports are saying that chocolate will become “like caviar” — i.e., a luxury good beyond the price range of most people — as prices and demand skyrocket.
This is terrible. I eat an obscene amount of chocolate: chocolate milk with breakfast, or Nutella on my toast. A mini-chocolate bar with lunch. Every day. My favorite desserts all involve chocolate. The idea of it becoming scarce is frightening — and yet, entirely realistic and probably an insight into what will happen more and more frequently in the future. Those of us who read the In Death books knows how the artificial stuff in the future isn’t nearly as good as the real, whether it’s coffee, meat, or, yes, chocolate.
I guess I should start planning for the apocalypse now and find something new that will satisfy my cravings. Any suggestions?
Mmmm – not good news. I’ll miss cocoa (powder – not the hot drink) more than readymade chocolate confections though. It’s much more satisfying – deep and rich and strong – in a recipe than a semi-sweet or milk chocolate or even a bittersweet.
Jean AAR – I’m with you on the plain unsweetened yoghurt but it has to be REAL yogurt, i.e., just the milk and bacterial ingredients – no cornstarch or gelatin or any of that stuff. Have you tried Greek-style yogurt or the sheep’s milk yogurt? Yum.
Actually, my food of choice at uni was honey. I’d just eat it out of a pot when I was hungry, put it in coffee, tea, on graham crackers, with cheese, etc. etc. The other thing I’ve grown into is plain unsweetened yoghurt, which is now my favourite kind. It’s just…comforting.
Ack!!! I have to have something chocolate every day.
Yikes! I’m not even that big of a chocoholic, but when I want chocolate, I want it. Yes, clearly parts of the In Death books are good reads on bad things for the future.
