Background Sound

When I was still in school, I used to divide up my listening music according to subjects.  I could play anything during math, “thinking” music (aka Mozart and Bach) for sciences, and absolute silence for English and History.  (Are you kidding?  I’d never get anything done.)  Now that I’ve finished with school I can listen to a larger variety of music during my busy moments in the house, i.e. chores, cleaning, fixing, etc.

The loud, energetic music is best for cleaning, especially vacuuming (hello, Green Day), but anything’s good.  However, I’ve also gotten into the habit of turning on a dialogue-heavy movie that I know well, and just letting it run in the background. P&P, North & South, Gosford Park, Little Miss Sunshine, Pixar movies, LOTR (all twelve hours) – I can happily let these films just reel on while I go about my day.  Listening to movies is like listening to an audiobook but even better, with a narrative trajectory and good soundtrack and mouthing along to the best lines.  (Okay, I’m a nerd.  I know.)

What do you listen to at home to fill the background?  Anyone else listen to movies?

I don’t listen to movies, although that is a great idea…but I do have music on or a TV on. I guess I like the background noise. Mostly I listen to an alternative rock channel. I can have it throughout the house, but I am the only one who enjoys it…that much, so when the gang comes home I switch it to the kitchen only. In the car…I have CD’s that I get addicted to and play them until I am sick of them. :)

I listen to books in the car, but in the house I love the silence. I get so tired of music in every freakin’ store I go into!! There are a few stores that have the worst music ever (Tuesday Morning is one of the main offenders). I will never forget one day I was at TJ Maxx and they played an easy listening version of Billy Idol’s Dancing With Myself (shudder).

There was a time when I was younger where I would always have the radio on listening to music. As soon as I walked in the door, I’d click it on. On Saturdays, my day off, I would clean the house while the college football games were playing on the TV. But music was usually the background of choice.

These days, I find I only listen to the radio in the car and then it’s usually tuned into a talk station; unless others are in the car, then I have a music station on. At home, I prefer the quiet; in fact, I love it. The best time of the day for me is the morning, when only the dog and I are awake, and it’s blissfully quiet, having my coffee, bagel and reading the paper, followed by time on the computer. Like now! LOL
