Speaking of Audio Books: July Releases
Part of my morning ritual, along with looking at the news headlines, checking email, and stopping by AAR, is seeing what’s new in audio romance. It’s a little like opening a grab bag as I wonder if I will be thrilled, bored, or disappointed with the day’s audio romance releases. You see, I never know what to expect release-wise and I gave up seriously looking for a list of upcoming audio books after many failed attempts to find a complete romance listing. After all, that morning look always promised the possibility of a bit of excitement, even as my audio book budget toppled yet again from the lack of planning.
I’m sure there are other audio book listeners who eagerly watch for that next terrific production because we all know that very few of our favorite books actually make it to the world of audio. As a result, it seems only natural to include a list of upcoming audio book releases as we develop a place on AAR for audio book fans.
But sharing a comprehensive upcoming romance audio book list with you is not as easy as I hoped since I have yet to find that magical list even after intensifying my search. Instead, I found it necessary to put together our own list after researching a number of audio book sites and, although I am rather pleased with the results, I am certain it is not complete. So, are you up to a group project? You can help me refine the list I’ve already put together by sharing any other upcoming audio romance books you know of for the month of July (as well as where you obtained that information – please). Once we have all made our contributions, the combined list of upcoming romance audio books will be published on AAR’s main site.
You may notice books that were already offered in audio format but hold a place on this list because a new format is now available (abridged versus unabridged, CD, or download). Also, if you see any book that is not a romance, please let me know. And another issue: I discovered last night, much to my chagrin, that it’s easy to equate any list of upcoming audio books to that of a moving target as release dates change. Within three days of building this list, five of July’s releases were moved to August and five more were added to July. So, please be forgiving of exact dates!
As far as our Speaking of Audio Book articles on AAR’s News and Commentary Blog, you will now see a general discussion piece (as we had in May and June) the first week of each month and a mid-month upcoming releases list with discussion. And, beginning in July, our mutually-improved romance audio book new release list (what a mouthful) can be found on AAR’s main site under Features around the first of each month. We plan to pursue interviews with narrators as well but have nothing definite on that as of yet.
And a few more tidbits:
While exploring future releases, I discovered more than a few older titles to enrich our libraries later in 2009, but three in particular are slated for November: Julie Garwood’s The Bride, Linda Howard’s Son of the Morning, and Christine Feehan’s Wild Rain!
I just finished listening to Dream Man by Linda Howard and I thought it was a great production with Phil Gigante’s narration. I do, however, have one complaint and that has nothing to do with the audio production and everything to do with the hero, Dane. Having read this personal favorite at least four times, Dane’s “I know best” actions concerning Marlie and the media finally hit the grrrr level for me. It’s never affected me in that manner before – could it be hearing it rather than reading it?
At least two of the following July releases will make it into my audio library. As one of Linda Howard’s faithful, I am eagerly waiting for Burn. And second, Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas. Did you know her recent historicals are now being produced as audio books?
Time for your thoughts:
What July releases are you looking forward to? Do you know of any releases for July not found in our list?
What have you listened to lately and do you recommend it?
What topics do you want to see in our audio discussions?
Good to see all you fellow audio lovers here.

I find myself like you may more than likely train some elegance upon how to make a superb web site. This really fantastic! Groundbreaking, i was express, everything that really gotten everyone was a style and design. You certainly find out how to get your blog around a rant approximately a problem. Youve made it simple for visitors to link up. Effective for you, due to the fact not more and more consumers know what theyre working on.

I get my audio books from Books on Board. They have a pretty large selection in the romance genre, although you do find many of the titles in the general fiction section. The audio books are WMA and if they are available in MP3, that option is usually there.
I am looking forward to:
Julia Quinn’s latest-What Happens in London 6/30
Heather Graham-Dust to Dust 6/30
Allison Brennan’s-Cutting Edge 7/28

Raquel,
I see you posted a new thread and although this could have fit some way into three forums, I think the one you chose, Potpourri, is the best. I know you will have a good time posting on our forums!

Lea, I heard that information from a Richard Armitage fan. I checked it at Amazon and his name was on the CD jacket.
I thought that, too.
I’ve never participated in the forum and I didn’t know which thread is appropriate. Maybe I’d creat a new topic?

Raquel – Sylvester is read by Richard Armitage? I think we have more than a few on AAR who would like to hear that bit of info. Maybe on the North and South thread??
Diana – I was a little concerned a narrator may not pull off the many voices in Over the Edge successfully but sounds like you were perfectly happy with the narration (or almost). I think that is my next listen. And I am once again totally surprised by Gone Too Far’s release – thanks for keeping me informed! I was one who was not disappointed in Sam and Alyssa’s story and will be buying that one in audio as well since narrator Deborah Hazlett sounds exceptional on the sample. And I must admit that I still love Dane for the most part and his move-in-take-over behavior.
Susan – I would appreciate any further info (articles and such) you could send me on your comments. I must admit – I don’t have a great understanding of that process.
Azure – Please let me know if you figure out anything more about RB versus Audible. Working their two future release lists into one is challenging.

On many occasions I find the book available at Audible before RB says it’s due to be released. It makes me wonder sometimes why I still belong to RB’s rental plan, except I know not all of their titles are available at Audible. (Like Gone with the Wind, for instance, which I plan to buy on CD as soon as I can afford it.)

Lea, Recordedbooks.com lists all their upcoming releases for August and September. Titles are alphabetized so you have to pick through to find our genre. Highlights for me include:
Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabldon
Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger
Lover Awakened by JR Ward
Smash Cut by Sandra Brown (strange title)
Titles by Krentz, Laurens, Deveraux, Kenyon, Garwood, and Kelley Armstrong also on their list. RB is one of the few not yet swallowed up by Amazon as far as I know. Their release dates are extremely flexible and not to be trusted.

Thanks for the list! I am quite frankly astonished at how out of touch with romance fans the people at Audible.com seem to be. They had Smooth Talking Stranger at least a couple of weeks before the book was released and didn’t put it on the romance page until well after the book was out. Duh. Yesterday I searched Brockmann on a whim and found Gone Too Far showing a release date of 6/1. You and I both know that was never on the romance new release page! WTF? Since I found Over the Edge hidden from buyers by happy accident I guess I’m not surprised. OtE is very good btw if you can get past the narrator pronouncing Karmody kar-MOE-dee. Weird and jarring.
I have to admit that I still love (I’m moving in so get used to it) Dane as much as ever. Gigante’s Dane voice is perfect but I still don’t react well to the fluttering breathy voice he gives to women. I tried Dark Highlander again and didn’t make it to the end. Chloe sounds like a really dumb ninny but a big contributor to that is that she’s written as a really dumb ninny. Sorry, I’m not drinking the Gigante kool-ade quite yet!

Thank you for the list!
Did you know Sylverster is read by Richard Armitage?
I usually don’t check abridged version but I’m going to buy this one.

Perhaps AAR, representing lovers of romance literature, could influence publishers of romance novels to make more of their lists available as audiobooks. It shouldn’t be too hard to do, since all submissions come in digital form. If a publisher is digitizing its backlist, those books would be equally easy to convert to audiobooks.
